Transport of Fuels on the road

In Canada any Transport of Dangerous Goods is governed by Transport Canada who publish the ‘Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act'.

The TDG Act Specifies that a fuel Tank must be manufactured to, and the design must be approved to, a few codes including CAN CGSB 143.146, TC44, etc.

In addition the tank must be accurately Placarded, and the driver must have ‘Dangerous Goods Certification'.

The following Exemptions are present in The TDG Act:

  • Dangerous Goods Certification is not required when transporting 2000 L or less
  • Transporting Diesel in a Container with a Capacity of 450 Litres/99 Gallons or less the tank does not need to be an ‘approved' means of Containment.
